Trivium formed in Orlando, Florida in 1999, originally as a trio of bassist and vocalist Brad Lewter, guitarist Jarred Bonaparte, and drummer Travis Smith. Matt Heafy joined as a guitarist and backing vocalist in late 1999 and eventually took over lead vocals when Lewter departed in 2000. Hailing from central Florida, the band quickly built a buzz around Orlando's metal community with a blend of metalcore, thrash, and progressive metal. After a series of early demos and lineup shifts, the band secured a contract with the German Lifeforce imprint and issued its debut album, Ember to Inferno, in October 2003, with a lineup that included Heafy, drummer Travis Smith, and bassist Brent Young. The band's true breakthrough arrived with its second album. The debut was well-received and Trivium signed with Roadrunner Records for their next effort, Ascendancy, which appeared in March 2005, at which point the band's roster had shifted to include Heafy, Smith, bassist Paolo Gregoletto, and guitarist Corey Beaulieu. The album became a defining moment for the group, winning the "Album of the Year Award" from Kerrang! magazine in 2005 and selling 500,000 copies worldwide , even though it only peaked at #151 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 on the US Top Heatseekers chart. Riding that momentum, Trivium then visited the U.K. in June for the 2006 Download Festival, followed by multiple European headlining gigs and a stint with America's traveling metal/hardcore fest Sounds of the Underground. The classic era lineup of Heafy, Beaulieu, and Gregoletto, alongside Smith on drums, would carry the band through its most celebrated run of releases.
