About American Head Charge

American Head Charge was an industrial metal band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1996 by vocalist Cameron Heacock and bassist Chad Hanks, the two reportedly meeting in a rehabilitation facility. The band built its early foundation on the Minneapolis underground scene, releasing an independent debut, Trepanation (1999), before attracting the attention of producer Rick Rubin, who signed them to his American Recordings label after a recommendation from System of a Down. Their major-label debut, The War of Art (2001), was produced by Rubin and placed the band alongside the front rank of early 2000s industrial-influenced metal, earning two Kerrang! Award nominations. The full lineup included Heacock and Hanks alongside keyboardist Justin Fowler, guitarist Bryan Ottoson, and drummer Chris Emery. They appeared on Ozzfest 2001 and toured with Ozzy Osbourne, Slipknot, and System of a Down, building a reputation for chaotic and confrontational live performances. Personal struggles including serious addiction issues among multiple members derailed the band's momentum and led to a hiatus beginning in 2009. Guitarist Bryan Ottoson died in 2005 of an accidental prescription drug overdose. The band reformed in 2011 and released Tango Umbrella in 2016 via Napalm Records before going on hiatus again in 2017. Their music drew from Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Korn, and Faith No More, blending electronic textures with grinding metal aggression in a way that felt genuinely dangerous at its peak.
