Their self-titled debut (1995) and Dose (1998) established their template and built a devoted following on the jam band circuit, but it was the tragic death of Allen Woody from a drug overdose on August 26, 2000 that threatened to derail everything the band had built. Haynes and Abts honored Woody's memory with The Deep End (2001), a two-volume live album featuring a different guest bassist on each track — including Flea, Jack Bruce, Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins, and Roger Glover — that became one of the most celebrated tribute recordings in rock. Bassist Andy Hess joined permanently in 2001 and the band rebuilt around their grief.

Gov't Mule have continued releasing acclaimed studio and live albums across three decades, including Deja Voodoo (2004), High & Mighty (2006), By a Thread (2009), and Shout! (2013), each demonstrating Haynes's extraordinary versatility as a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. Haynes simultaneously maintained his position as a member of the reformed Allman Brothers Band until their dissolution in 2014, a dual commitment that reflected his central importance to the Southern rock tradition. Gov't Mule remain one of the hardest-working and most respected acts on the American rock circuit, their live shows a reliable benchmark for what improvisational rock can achieve at its best.
