Earshot is an American alternative metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1999 by vocalist and guitarist Wil Martin — the band's sole constant member through every lineup change across more than two decades. Martin founded the group with guitarist Scott Kohler, bassist Guy Couturier, and drummer Todd Wyatt, with Mike Callahan on guitar and Johnny Sprague on bass joining after the debut album was completed. The band built their early reputation through club shows in Los Angeles before attracting the attention of Warner Bros. Records, whose faith in their commercial potential was validated almost immediately by their debut single's radio performance.
After signing with Warner Bros., Earshot released their debut album Letting Go in 2002, produced by David Kahne and mixed by Andy Wallace — a pairing whose combined credits included Paul Simon, the Bangles, Rage Against the Machine, and Nirvana. The lead single Get Away peaked at number four on the US Active Rock chart and stayed in the top 100 for over 64 weeks, a remarkable sustained run that established the band as a genuine radio presence. The song Headstrong was featured on The Queen of the Damned soundtrack alongside tracks from Disturbed, Deftones, and Marilyn Manson. The band toured extensively in support with Hoobastank, Shinedown, Staind, Kid Rock, Disturbed, Sevendust, Filter, Saliva, Static-X, and Stone Temple Pilots.
Two (2004), their sophomore album, was produced by Johnny K and mixed by Rich Costey, and debuted at number 127 on the Billboard 200. The breakout single Wait peaked at number nine on Active Rock and was featured on the Madden NFL 2005 and MX vs. ATV Unleashed video game soundtracks, expanding the band's reach significantly. The follow-up single Someone also charted. After touring through 2005, Warner Bros. parted ways with the band — an outcome Martin described as the industry turning its ugly head — but Earshot refused to fold, eventually signing with Indegoot/Fontana/Universal and releasing their third album The Silver Lining in 2008. The single MisSunderstood charted on Active Rock.
Following a lengthy hiatus, Earshot returned with the five-song EP Aftermath (2015), produced by Martin and mixed by Sam Hughes, which included an acoustic version of Fall Apart and the new track Let Me. Humaning, their fourth full-length album, arrived in 2025, their first in 17 years, demonstrating Martin's commitment to keeping the band alive well beyond the commercial window of the early 2000s. The current lineup alongside Martin includes guitarist Aaron Fink, bassist John Novak, and drummer Mike Sylvia.
Wayne Dennon photographed Earshot as part of an archive that captured alternative metal during one of its most competitive eras. The band's run at Warner Bros. produced two albums that hold up as solid examples of the format at its most melodically focused, and Wil Martin's refusal to stop building the band long after the major label years ended is its own kind of story.
