Goatwhore is an American blackened death metal band from New Orleans, Louisiana, formed in 1997 by guitarist and primary songwriter Sammy Duet following his departure from Acid Bath. The band's sound — a ferocious and precisely executed blend of black metal atmosphere, death metal brutality, and thrash metal energy with a distinctly Southern heaviness that reflects their New Orleans roots — has made them one of the most respected and consistent acts in American extreme metal across nearly three decades of recording and performing. Vocalist Ben Falgoust, who joined in 2002, became the voice most associated with the band's identity through a decade and a half of relentless touring.
Signed to Metal Blade Records, Goatwhore built their reputation through an extraordinary touring work ethic — becoming one of the most frequently touring acts in extreme metal, appearing on virtually every major metal festival and package tour and developing a live reputation for crushing, high-energy performances that won over audiences across the extreme metal spectrum. Albums including A Haunting Curse (2006), Carving Out the Eyes of God (2009), Blood for the Master (2012), and Constricting Rage of the Merciless (2014) each refined and deepened their approach, with Carving Out the Eyes of God in particular receiving widespread critical acclaim as one of the finest extreme metal albums of its era.
Falgoust's departure in 2020 to focus on his other band Soilent Green was a significant transition, with the remaining members recruiting new vocalist Zach Donahue. The band released Angels Hung from the Arches of Heaven (2022) with the new lineup to strong critical response, demonstrating the durability of Duet's songwriting vision beyond any single vocalist. Goatwhore's combination of genuine musical sophistication, underground credibility, and relentless live presence has made them one of the most enduring acts in American extreme metal.
