Cactus is an American hard rock band formed in New York in 1969, often described as one of the loudest and heaviest bands of the early 1970s and a significant precursor to heavy metal. The band featured a rotating cast of musicians including vocalist Rusty Day, guitarist Jim McCarty, bassist Tim Bogert, and drummer Carmine Appice — players who had previously been members of Vanilla Fudge and the Jeff Beck Group. Their debut album (1970) and its follow-up One Way...Or Another (1971) are considered cult classics of early hard rock, featuring a raw, blues-drenched heaviness that put them ahead of their time. The band reunited in various configurations decades later, with McCarty leading a version of Cactus that has continued recording and touring.
