3 Doors Down is an American rock band formed in Escatawpa, Mississippi in 1996, consisting of vocalist Brad Arnold, guitarist Matt Roberts, bassist Todd Harrell, and drummer Chris Henderson. The band built their sound around a melodic, post-grunge formula that balanced heavy guitar riffs with emotionally direct lyrics and big, radio-friendly choruses — a combination that resonated deeply with mainstream rock audiences in the early 2000s and established them as one of the most commercially successful rock acts of their generation.
The band rose to national prominence almost overnight with their debut single Kryptonite in 2000, a song Arnold had written at age fourteen that became one of the defining rock tracks of the era. Kryptonite spent an extraordinary 43 weeks on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and crossed over to mainstream pop radio, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Their debut album The Better Life, released the same year, went on to sell over six million copies in the United States, a remarkable achievement for a band from a small Mississippi town with virtually no prior industry connections.
Follow-up albums Away from the Sun (2002) and Seventeen Days (2005) cemented their commercial standing, with both debuting in the top five on the Billboard 200. Away from the Sun produced the hits When I'm Gone and Here Without You, the latter of which became one of their most enduring songs — spending 27 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 chart. Seventeen Days debuted at number one and went platinum, demonstrating that their audience had grown rather than faded between releases.
3 Doors Down have sold over twenty million albums worldwide over the course of their career and have remained a consistent presence on the rock touring circuit. The band has been involved in numerous charitable and military support efforts over the years, performing multiple times for U.S. troops overseas and participating in various benefit concerts. Despite lineup changes over the years — including the departure of founding guitarist Matt Roberts due to health issues — the band has continued recording and performing, maintaining a loyal fanbase that has followed them from the early days of Kryptonite through decades of arena rock.
