Submersed was an American hard rock and alternative metal band from Stephenville, Texas, formed in 2001 by vocalist Donald Carpenter, guitarist Eric Friedman, guitarist TJ Davis, bassist Kelan Luker, and drummer Garrett Whitlock. The band built their sound around melodic post-grunge heaviness with dynamic arrangements that drew comparisons to Our Lady Peace and Creed. Their origins were as unlikely as any in rock: Carpenter had served in the US Army before pursuing music, and bassist Kelan Luker had been named Texas High School Quarterback of the Decade at Stephenville High School before turning down a starting position at Southern Methodist University to play bass instead. When the band relocated to Dallas, Carpenter's friend TJ Davis completed the lineup and the group began working on the demo material that would attract label attention.
The band signed with Wind-up Records and released their debut album In Due Time in September 2004, co-produced by Mark Tremonti of Creed and Alter Bridge — a significant endorsement that reflected genuine belief in the material. The album peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and featured the singles Hollow, You Run, and the title track. Their song Divide the Hate was featured on the NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup video game soundtrack. In support of the debut the band toured extensively alongside Trapt, Crossfade, Seether, Rob Zombie, Chevelle, Mudvayne, and Alter Bridge, building a grassroots following through consistent live performance across the US and Canada.
Their sophomore album Immortal Verses arrived in 2007, produced by Rick Beato and featuring the singles Better Think Again and Price of Fame. The band toured again with 12 Stones, Evans Blue, and Fuel before Wind-up Records dropped them and Submersed disbanded in 2008. The weight of the ending was compounded when the band's longtime manager Seth Luker — Kelan's brother — died in the years that followed. In March 2019, a partial acoustic reunion of Carpenter, Friedman, and Kelan Luker took place at the Twisted J Live in Stephenville for Lukerpalooza, a benefit and memorial for Seth, sharing the bill with Drowning Pool and Tremonti.
That reunion led to a full reformation in the early 2020s, and the band released Grand Illusion Army in September 2024 — their third studio album and first new material in 17 years. The album was re-released as Grand Illusion Army (Reborn) in February 2025. The comeback confirmed that the core of what Submersed had been building in 2001 was still intact and worth continuing.
Wayne Dennon photographed Submersed as part of an archive that captured the working-class end of early 2000s alternative metal — bands with strong songs, serious road time, and real emotional investment in the music they were making. Submersed were exactly that kind of band, and their long road back makes the reunion all the more meaningful.
