Stereomud is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1999 by vocalist Paul Durham, guitarist Patrick Kennison, bassist Craig Silverman, and drummer Jay Selsky. The band signed to Loud Records and released their debut album Perfect Self (2001), which produced the rock radio staples Pain and Believe — both of which received significant airplay on active rock stations and introduced the band to a national audience hungry for the melodic nu metal and post-grunge sound they had developed. Durham's powerful, emotionally raw vocals and the band's groove-heavy guitar approach gave them a sound that fit squarely into the early 2000s hard rock mainstream.
Pain in particular became their signature track, its combination of heavy verses and melodic chorus capturing the post-grunge template at its most effective and earning the band consistent airplay that helped Perfect Self achieve solid commercial results. The album established Stereomud as a credible presence in the active rock format and led to extensive touring alongside major acts of the era. Every Given Moment (2003) followed on RCA Records and continued their rock radio presence with additional singles that maintained their audience connection.
The band went through lineup changes and label transitions through the mid-2000s before disbanding, with Durham eventually emerging as the frontman of a reformed Stereomud that continued performing for a fanbase that remembered their early 2000s radio success fondly. Their catalog represents a snapshot of American hard rock at the peak of the post-grunge and nu metal crossover moment, and Pain remains a recognizable track for anyone who followed rock radio during that era. Durham's vocal performances across both albums demonstrated a genuine talent that deserved a wider audience than the band ultimately achieved.
