The band's breakthrough came through an unlikely connection — after being publicly berated by Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit at a 1997 concert for their Satanic imagery, the confrontation turned into a friendship when Durst heard their music backstage and became an advocate. Durst helped secure Staind a record deal with Flip/Interscope Records, and their major label debut Dysfunction (1999), produced by Durst, went double platinum and launched their commercial career. Break the Cycle (2001) was their commercial peak, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and eventually selling over seven million copies worldwide. The album produced It's Been Awhile, a deeply personal ballad about Lewis's struggles with addiction that spent sixteen weeks at number one on the Mainstream Rock chart — one of the longest runs in the chart's history — and crossed over to massive pop radio success.

14 Shades of Grey (2003) and Chapter V (2005) both debuted at number one, making Staind one of the few rock acts of their era to achieve that distinction with three consecutive albums. Lewis's willingness to bare his personal demons in his lyrics — addiction, broken relationships, estrangement from his daughter — gave the band a confessional authenticity that separated them from more polished contemporaries. The band went on hiatus in 2012 as Lewis pursued a successful country solo career, reunited in 2019, and released their eighth album Confessions of the Fallen in 2023, their first new music in over a decade.
