Samael is a Swiss metal band formed in 1987 in Sion, Switzerland, built around brothers Vorph (vocals/guitar) and Xy (keyboards/programming). They began as one of the earliest second-wave black metal bands, with their initial demos drawing comparisons to Celtic Frost and fellow Swiss legends Hellhammer, before signing with Osmose Productions and releasing their debut album Worship Him in 1991. Their second album Blood Ritual (1992) followed on Century Media Records, and by the time Ceremony of Opposites arrived in 1994 the band had begun weaving industrial textures, keyboards, and electronic elements into their black metal foundation - a bold evolution that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their landmark album Passage (1996) brought them to a wider audience, incorporating drum machines, martial rhythms, and symphonic arrangements into a sound that was entirely their own. The music video for Jupiterian Vibe received airplay on MTV's Headbanger's Ball and the band embarked on major European tours alongside Obituary, Entombed, Kreator, and Strapping Young Lad. Eternal (1999) was recorded at the legendary Mountain Studios in Montreux where Queen had recorded, pushing further into electronic and atmospheric territory. Over the following decades Samael continued to evolve across albums including Reign of Light (2004), Solar Soul (2007), Lux Mundi (2011), and Hegemony (2017) on Napalm Records, remaining one of the most distinctive and uncompromising acts in European metal with a career spanning nearly four decades.
