Their early EPs and albums including The Warning (1984) and Rage for Order (1986) built a devoted following among fans who appreciated their willingness to push beyond conventional metal boundaries, but it was Operation: Mindcrime (1988) that established them as one of the most ambitious and important acts in rock. A fully realized concept album telling the story of a drug-addicted assassin manipulated by a shadowy political organization, Operation: Mindcrime is widely regarded as one of the greatest concept albums in rock history — a sustained narrative and musical achievement that rivaled the best work of progressive rock's golden era. Empire (1990) brought them their greatest commercial success, reaching number seven on the Billboard 200 and producing the power ballad Silent Lucidity, which reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Grammy nominations.

The band navigated significant creative and commercial decline through the 1990s and 2000s as progressive metal fell out of mainstream favor, eventually reaching a breaking point with the acrimonious firing of Tate in 2012 following years of internal tension. The remaining members recruited Todd La Torre as Tate's replacement and released Queensrÿche (2013) to widespread critical praise, with many reviewers noting that the album sounded more vital and energized than anything the band had released in years. La Torre's powerful voice and the reunited classic musical lineup have continued recording and touring, maintaining Queensrÿche's legacy as one of progressive metal's foundational acts.
