Skillet is an American Christian rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1996 by vocalist and bassist John Cooper and guitarist Ken Steorts, who met when their respective bands were touring together and were encouraged by their pastor to form a new group. The name came from the idea of throwing different musical styles into a skillet to see what would cook up - a joke that stuck. Signed almost immediately to ForeFront Records, the band released their self-titled debut in 1996 and spent the following years evolving their sound through post-grunge, electronic, and industrial influences across a series of albums. Cooper's wife Korey joined permanently on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and the current lineup solidified around husband and wife duo John and Korey Cooper, drummer and vocalist Jen Ledger, and lead guitarist Seth Morrison. The band broke through to mainstream hard rock audiences with the Grammy-nominated Comatose (2006) and its follow-up Awake (2009), which was certified Double Platinum and produced the six-times Platinum single Monster - the biggest digital single in the history of Christian music at the time with over 2.6 million sales. Further hits including Hero, Awake and Alive, Feel Invincible, and Whispers in the Dark built Skillet into one of the most commercially successful Christian rock acts of all time. Their album Dominion (2022) was their final release on Atlantic Records after a 20-year partnership. Across 12 studio albums and 21 number one chart singles, Skillet has sold over two million albums in the US alone while maintaining one of the most relentless touring schedules in rock.
