Y&T is an American hard rock and heavy metal band from Oakland, California, formed in 1974 as Yesterday and Today before shortening their name to Y&T in 1981. Built around the extraordinary guitar work and soulful vocals of Dave Meniketti alongside guitarist Joey Alves, bassist Phil Kennemore, and drummer Leonard Haze, the band developed one of the most musically accomplished sounds in American hard rock — combining British heavy metal influences with a genuine blues feeling and melodic sensibility that gave them a depth that many of their contemporaries lacked. Their Bay Area origins connected them to a local rock scene that valued musicianship above image, and that ethic pervaded everything they recorded.
The band spent years building their reputation through relentless touring before signing with A&M Records and releasing a string of albums in the early 1980s that earned critical respect and a devoted following without achieving the mainstream commercial breakthrough their talent deserved. Earthshaker (1981), Black Tiger (1982), and Mean Streak (1983) are considered the cornerstones of their catalog — heavy, melodic hard rock albums featuring Meniketti's extraordinary guitar solos and his remarkably versatile voice, which could move from raw blues grit to soaring melodic heights within a single song. Mean Streak in particular is regarded by many hard rock enthusiasts as one of the finest albums of the era, its combination of heavy riffing, melodic hooks, and genuine emotional depth placing it alongside the best work of their British heavy metal contemporaries.
Down for the Count (1985) and Contagious (1987) continued their recording output as the band navigated the shifting commercial landscape of mid-1980s hard rock, with Summertime Girls from Contagious becoming their biggest American hit and receiving significant MTV airplay. Bassist Phil Kennemore's death from lung cancer on January 7, 2011 was a devastating loss for the band and their community, but Meniketti has continued leading Y&T through lineup changes with remarkable resilience, releasing Facemelter (2010) and Unbroken (2024) and maintaining a touring schedule that demonstrates his genuine love of performing. Y&T have sold over four million albums worldwide and remain one of the most respected and beloved acts in classic American hard rock, their catalog a testament to musical integrity over commercial calculation.
