Five Finger Death Punch — known by fans as 5FDP or FFDP — is an American heavy metal band from Las Vegas, Nevada, formed in 2005 by guitarist Zoltan Bathory. A former member of U.P.O., Bathory had a clear vision for a band that combined crushing groove metal riffs with melodic, emotionally raw vocals, and he took the name from a scene in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Volume 2, misremembering the "Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique" as "Five Finger Death Punch." Drummer Jeremy Spencer, formerly of W.A.S.P., responded to Bathory's ad and became the co-founding rhythm section. Vocalist Ivan Moody — previously with Motograter and Ghost Machine — was recruited in 2006 after flying from Denver to Los Angeles for an audition he performed with his back to the room, too shy to face the band directly. He and Bathory have remained the two constants across every album and lineup configuration the band has had.
The debut album, The Way of the Fist (2007), was released independently and eventually certified gold, launching the band with "The Bleeding" and establishing their signature approach — heavy, groove-driven metal built around Moody's ability to pivot from aggressive screams to soaring melodic passages within a single song. Guitarist Jason Hook, formerly of Alice Cooper's touring band, joined in 2009 and played on every album through 2020. Bassist Chris Kael replaced Matt Snell in 2011 and remains. War Is the Answer (2009) was the commercial breakthrough — certified platinum, peaking at number three on the Hard Rock Albums chart, and producing multiple Mainstream Rock top 10 hits including "Hard to See" (number 8), "Walk Away" (number 7), and the power ballad "Far from Home." Their cover of Bad Company's "Bad Company" became one of their most beloved tracks and a staple of their live set.
American Capitalist (2011) peaked at number two on the Hard Rock Albums chart and went platinum, with "Under and Over It" and "Coming Down" becoming rock radio staples and "Remember Everything" reaching number two on Mainstream Rock. The ambitious two-volume project The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell (2013) debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 — the band's best all-genre chart position — and both volumes hit number one on the Hard Rock Albums chart. Got Your Six (2015) also debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the Hard Rock Albums chart, as did And Justice for None (2018). Throughout this run, the band accumulated multiple number one singles on the Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts, multiple Revolver Golden Gods Awards, and a reputation as one of the most consistent live draws in modern metal.
Running parallel to the band's commercial ascent was Ivan Moody's very public battle with alcohol and addiction, which at times disrupted tours mid-set and raised genuine questions about the band's future. Moody has spoken openly about his struggles and his path to sobriety, and the emotional weight of that journey runs through much of the band's most affecting material. Jeremy Spencer departed in 2018 due to recurring back issues and was replaced by Charlie Engen. Jason Hook left in 2020 and was replaced by British guitarist Andy James. The band has released nine studio albums through AfterShock (2020), Afterlife (2022), and continued to headline major festivals and arenas worldwide. Zoltan Bathory has also become known beyond music for his dedication to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and his advocacy work on behalf of veterans and active-duty military — a cause the band has championed throughout their career through USO appearances and PTSD awareness initiatives.
Wayne Dennon photographed Five Finger Death Punch as part of an archive spanning modern metal's most commercially successful acts. FFDP onstage are a study in controlled aggression — Moody's presence alone commands attention — and the band's combination of heaviness and melody has connected with audiences that mainstream metal hadn't always reached. Wayne's images capture exactly that kind of intensity.
