Anthrax is an American heavy metal band formed in New York City in 1981, and one of the four acts that defined the genre known as the Big Four of thrash metal โ alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Founded by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker, Anthrax brought a distinctly East Coast energy to thrash metal, combining the speed and aggression of the emerging genre with a sense of humor, a love of comic books and pop culture, and a groove-oriented rhythmic approach that set them apart from their West Coast contemporaries. Over four decades of recording and performing, Anthrax have remained one of the most consistent and beloved acts in heavy metal.
The band cycled through several early lineups before finding their footing with vocalist Neil Turbin and guitarist Dan Spitz joining Ian and drummer Charlie Benante in the early 1980s. Their debut album Fistful of Metal (1984) announced their arrival with raw, fast, and aggressive thrash that drew comparisons to early Metallica. The arrival of vocalist Joey Belladonna for the 1985 album Spreading the Disease proved to be a turning point โ Belladonna's clean, powerful voice gave Anthrax a melodic dimension that distinguished them from their peers and helped broaden their appeal without softening their aggression. Among the Living (1987) is widely considered their masterpiece, a relentless and perfectly constructed thrash album featuring classics like Indians, I Am the Law, and Caught in a Mosh that remains one of the genre's essential documents.
Anthrax were pioneers in bridging the worlds of heavy metal and hip hop, most notably through their 1991 collaboration with Public Enemy on a remake of Bring the Noise โ one of the earliest and most successful metal-rap crossovers, predating the genre fusion that would dominate rock radio later in the decade. The collaboration reflected the band's genuine love of hip hop and their willingness to push boundaries in ways that many of their peers were unwilling to attempt. Their embrace of shorts, sneakers, and skateboard culture also gave them a visual identity that felt more connected to youth street culture than the leather-and-spandex aesthetic dominant in metal at the time.
The band navigated significant lineup changes through the 1990s and 2000s, most notably the departure and eventual return of Belladonna, and a period fronted by John Bush whose tenure produced several critically respected albums including Sound of White Noise (1993). The reunited classic lineup โ Ian, Benante, Belladonna, bassist Frank Bello, and guitarist Rob Caggiano โ released Worship Music in 2011 to widespread critical acclaim, with many reviewers calling it among the best albums of their career. Anthrax performed as part of the historic Big Four concert at Yankee Stadium in 2010 alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, a landmark event for thrash metal that drew massive worldwide attention. They continue to record and tour with undiminished intensity, their legacy as one of heavy metal's founding pillars firmly intact.
