About Norah Jones

Norah Jones was born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar on March 30, 1979, in New York City, the daughter of concert producer Sue Jones and Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar โ€” one of the most unexpected and definitive musical figures of the early 21st century, an artist whose debut album in 2002 swept the Grammy Awards, sold over 26 million copies, and redirected millions of listeners toward a quieter, more introspective kind of music at a moment when the charts were dominated by something very different. Her parents never married and separated in 1986. Jones grew up with her mother in Grapevine, Texas, where she sang in her church choir from age five and began developing a deep love for jazz, particularly the piano work of Bill Evans and the vocal artistry of Billie Holiday. She attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, where Down Beat magazine recognized her with Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist in both 1996 and 1997 and Best Original Composition in 1996. She legally changed her name to Norah Jones at sixteen, having had little contact with her father during her childhood. She attended the University of North Texas as a jazz piano major for two years before moving to New York City in the summer of 1999 to pursue a career as a singer, initially playing in clubs and coffee houses.
