Hinder is an American rock band from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formed in 2001 around vocalist Austin Winkler, guitarist Joe Garvey, drummer Cody Hanson, and bassist Mike Rodden. The band built their following through relentless touring across the Midwest before catching the attention of Blabbermouth Records and eventually Republic Records, releasing their major label debut Extreme Behavior in 2005 and breaking through immediately with one of the defining rock radio hits of the mid-2000s. Their sound โ melodic post-grunge with a sleazy, hard-partying sensibility that recalled the spirit of 1980s rock more than their grunge-influenced contemporaries โ connected with a mainstream rock audience hungry for something less earnest and more fun.
Lips of an Angel, a piano-driven power ballad about longing for an ex while in a new relationship, became a massive crossover hit โ reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending six weeks at number one on the Adult Top 40 chart, making it one of the biggest rock crossover singles of the decade. Extreme Behavior sold over two million copies in the United States alone and established Hinder as a commercial force. Take It to the Limit (2008) and All American Nightmare (2010) maintained their rock radio presence and continued their touring momentum.
Winkler's departure from the band in 2013 was a significant transition, with Marshall Dutton stepping in as replacement vocalist for Welcome to the Freakshow (2012) and subsequent releases. The band navigated the lineup change with characteristic resilience, continuing to record and tour for a fanbase that had followed them since the Extreme Behavior era. Their run of radio hits and arena-level touring in the mid-to-late 2000s placed them firmly among the most commercially successful rock acts of that period, and Lips of an Angel remains one of the most recognizable rock ballads of the 21st century.
