Instruction formed in 2002 in Brooklyn, New York, bringing together musicians who had already made their mark in the citys hardcore and post-hardcore underground. Instruction was an alternative rock band that formed in 2002 in Brooklyn, New York, consisting of lead vocalist Arthur Shepherd, bassist Adam Marino, lead guitarist Tom Capone and drummer Ti Kreck. Capone in particular arrived with serious pedigree, having come up through the New York hardcore scene; he went on to play in the bands Bold, Quicksand, Shelter, Handsome and Instruction before helping shape this projects heavier, post-grunge-tinged alternative rock sound. The bands origins were somewhat unconventional for a Brooklyn act, as details of when the band originated are very obscure, though they started to tour at the back end of 2002, with the official website listing their first tour date as December 19, 2002 at the Cavern in Exeter, England. Rather than breaking through at home, Instruction found their earliest and most devoted audience overseas. After early shows in Boston and Brooklyn, they launched an extensive tour of the United Kingdom throughout 2003, playing cities such as Glasgow, Manchester, Norwich, Leicester, London and Middlesbrough, with nineteen of those dates supporting the up and coming Welsh band Funeral for a Friend. That groundwork paid off quickly: the band's original EP was released through Gravity DIP Records, and this EP, paired with the loyal following their successful UK tour gave them, led to an appearance at the Download Festival in 2003. As one retrospective put it, the band's sound could be traced to its members' earlier work, but "the real story is how this New York City unit got ignored at home, made the Brits fall in love with them." Building on that UK momentum, Instruction continued to tour steadily and expand their profile through high-profile support slots, including a run of gigs alongside acts like Biffy Clyro and Hundred Reasons. The band released material through a mix of independent and major-adjacent outlets, with labels including Gravity DIP, Geffen, and Sore Point appearing across their discography, and the groups lineup expanding over time to include additional members such as Joseph Grillo and Steve Sanderson. Despite the acclaim they built abroad, mainstream success in the United States remained elusive, and by the mid-2000s cracks began to show. The band announced a hiatus on August 5, 2005 after their final tour of the UK, playing their final show in Truro, England. In the wake of that hiatus, the members scattered into new projects that carried the same restless, hardcore-rooted energy forward. Shortly after, a new band formed from the former members of Instruction called Fires, which was quickly renamed God Fires Man, featuring Arthur Shepherd, Joseph Grillo, and other musicians drawn from the orbit of bands like Garrison, Errortype:11, and Walking Concert. Instruction never reunited in any lasting way, and the band is remembered less for chart statistics than for the loyalty of the UK scene that embraced them and for the pedigree of the musicians who passed through its ranks, several of whom remain respected figures in New York's hardcore and post-hardcore lineage to this day.
