Foo Fighters are an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1994 by Dave Grohl β the drummer of Nirvana β as a one-man project in the immediate aftermath of Kurt Cobain's death. Grohl, born in Warren, Ohio, and raised in Springfield, Virginia, had dropped out of high school to join the hardcore band Scream before audioning for Nirvana in 1990 and becoming one of the most recognizable drummers of the grunge era. After Cobain died by suicide in April 1994, Grohl channeled his grief and creative energy into a home recording session at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, laying down 15 songs alone β playing guitar, bass, drums, and singing every part. He named the project Foo Fighters after the WWII term Allied pilots used for unidentified aerial phenomena. What began as a solo tape he passed around to friends turned into a full band when he assembled bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate and guitarist Pat Smear, who had toured with Nirvana. The debut album was released on Capitol Records in 1995 and went platinum.
