Dope was formed in 1997 in New York City by brothers Edsel Dope and Simon Dope, who had been separated as children when their parents divorced and later reunited as adults, with Simon joining Edsel's project on keyboards, samples, and percussion. The pair then recruited Sloane Jentry as guitarist, Preston Nash as drummer, and Tripp Eisen as bassist. Unlike many of the popular bands from the 1990s, Dope derived their sound from influences taken from heavy metal bands and fused that with the sound of industrial rock acts who had made waves earlier in the decade, such as Ministry. Signing with Epic Records early on, the band quickly established a raw, aggressive style that blended metal muscle with industrial grit.
The band's breakthrough came with its debut album, which Dope's debut album and best-selling release to date, Felons and Revolutionaries, was released in September 1999. The album was released in 1999 on Epic Records and has sold over 236,000 copies in the United States, making it their best-selling album to date. It was later reissued with a cover of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" that helped expand the band's reach. Following a lineup shakeup, Dope released its second album, "Life," in the fall of 2001, which spawned the rock radio hits "Die MF Die" and "Now or Never." Through these years the classic lineup solidified around Edsel Dope on vocals, guitarist Virus, bassist-turned-guitarist Acey Slade, and drummer Racci "Sketchy" Shay, a configuration that would come to define the band's signature sound.
Dope's career arc included a deal with Artemis Records and the release of "Group Therapy" in 2003, followed by the harder-edged "American Apathy" in 2005, an album that marked a career peak commercially. Although released eight years after the band formed, four albums in and on an independent label, American Apathy performed well in the charts, becoming a No. 1 hit on the Top Heatseekers chart for the first time in the band's history and also seeing the band's highest charting on the Billboard chart to date. The band continued through numerous lineup changes over the years, with contributions from musicians including Brix Milner, Nikk Dibs, and Daniel Fox, while further albums like "No Regrets" in 2009 featured guest contributions from artists such as Zakk Wylde. Members also cross-pollinated with other bands in the scene, including Static-X, Murderdolls, and Wednesday 13's solo project, reflecting Dope's deep ties to the 2000s industrial and nu-metal touring circuit.
Dope has remained active into the 2020s, releasing "Blood Money Part 1" in 2016 and its follow-up, their most recent studio album, Blood Money Part Zer0, released in February 2023. The lineup currently consists of founding member and lead singer, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Edsel Dope, lead guitarist Virus, bassist Acey Slade, and drummer Daniel Fox, and as of 2022, they have sold over one million albums worldwide. Edsel Dope has also stayed visible in the broader metal community, including reuniting with Static-X for revival tours, cementing Dope's reputation as one of the enduring acts to emerge from the early-2000s industrial and nu-metal wave.
For this archive, Dope holds a modest but meaningful place. Wayne Dennon photographed the band during one show back in 2003, right around the release of "Group Therapy," capturing the group at a pivotal moment in their career. Preserved here alongside countless other bands he documented starting in 2002, these frames stand as a small but lasting record of Dope's place in the touring rock scene of the era, and of Wayne's eye for capturing it.
