Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984, growing out of the ashes of the local hardcore band Deep Wound. While Mascis and Barlow were in high school in Amherst, Massachusetts, they started playing in a hardcore band called Deep Wound, before venturing away from harder rock into more Neil Young and psychedelic influences. The group was formed as Dinosaur by guitarist, vocalist and Amherst native J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, raised in Westfield, and drummer Murph, born Emmett "Patrick" Murphy. Mascis, who also became the band's chief songwriter and took over vocals, recorded the trio's self-titled 1985 debut at a studio in the woods in Northampton, Massachusetts. The band later added "Jr." to its name after a legal threat, since the group faced legal action from the supergroup Dinosaurs, featuring former members of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and other classic acts, who had formed in California in 1982 and sued for use of the name. The band's true breakthrough came with its second and third albums. You're Living All Over Me, released in December 1987 through SST Records, refined the formula introduced on the band's debut and is now regarded as one of the greatest and most influential albums in alternative rock. Even so, its successor, Bug, ultimately became the band's true commercial breakthrough, even as You're Living All Over Me set the sonic template the band continued to draw from on every subsequent record. Bug also produced the fan favorite "Freak Scene," a song critics have called "the crossover success... the bona fide classic in the Dinosaur Jr canon; the one record that still sounds enormous to this day." Behind the scenes, tension was building, and the openly fractious relationship between Mascis and bassist Lou Barlow resulted in Barlow's ousting after 1988's Bug, two years before the band clinched a major label deal. The band then signed to Sire Records, and its major-label debut Green Mind (1991) was followed by Where You Been (1993), which reached No. 50 on the Billboard 200, and Without a Sound (1994), which peaked at No. 44. Through the 1990s, Dinosaur Jr. became largely a vehicle for Mascis, with Murph eventually leaving too. Upon its spring 1997 release, Hand It Over was hailed as Mascis' best album in years, though it failed to generate a significant hit, and by the late '90s Mascis decided to break up the band to launch a solo career. Remarkably, the story didn't end there. Mascis regained the master rights to the band's first three albums from SST in 2004 and arranged for their reissue on Merge in early 2005, and later that year he and Barlow shared a stage at a benefit show in Northampton, Massachusetts. Following the reissues, Mascis, Barlow and Murph finally reunited to play on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in April 2005, and that June they kicked off a tour of Europe. The reunited original lineup proved durable and creatively fruitful, and by the mid-2010s the surprisingly strong reunion of the original lineup beginning in 2006 produced distinctively monumental work, from the distortion-drenched pop of 2009's Farm to the seasoned fuzz of 2021's Sweep It Into Space. Dinosaur Jr. remains active today, still fronted by the original trio of Mascis, Barlow and Murph. In 2026 the band announced There Near, their thirteenth album and first in five years, released via Jagjaguwar. They have continued to tour steadily, including a run celebrating the 30th anniversary of Where You Been in December 2024 and a summer 2025 co-headlining tour with Snail Mail. Decades after their formation, the band's early records are still cited as foundational texts of alternative rock, with critics noting the influence of albums like You're Living All Over Me on "every major late 80s/early 90s guitar act." Their blend of melodic songcraft buried in walls of feedback and distortion helped define the sound that would become grunge and shoegaze, cementing their reputation as elder statesmen of American indie rock.
