The Devin Townsend Band formed in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2002, assembled by Canadian songwriter and guitarist Devin Townsend as a dedicated live and studio outfit for his solo material. Townsend, the lead vocalist and guitarist, assembled a group of Vancouver musicians to perform with him: guitarist Brian Waddell, drummer Ryan Van Poederooyen, bassist Mike Young, and keyboardist Dave Young, a lineup created as a counterpart to Townsend's extreme metal project Strapping Young Lad. This new group gave Townsend a stable band identity separate from Strapping Young Lad's abrasive intensity, one built to explore the more melodic, atmospheric, and progressive sound he had begun developing on his earlier solo work.
The band's breakthrough came with its debut album, Accelerated Evolution, released on Roadrunner Records in April 2003 . Townsend worked on the album at the same time he was working on Strapping Young Lad, splitting his week between the two projects, and it was released a month after Strapping Young Lad's self-titled album. The record earned strong praise, with Mike G. of Metal Maniacs calling it "the album of the year," praising it for "the hard-to-accomplish trick of being extreme yet accessible, simultaneously heavy 'n' rockin' yet majestic and beautiful." Critics also noted the band's ability to bridge genres, with Allmusic's Alex Henderson observing that the album blended alt rock elements with "the pop-metal, arena rock and hard rock of the '70s and '80s, big melodies, big harmonies, big guitars, big vocals, big production." Following the success of Accelerated Evolution, Townsend's two bands toured separately for their separate albums , allowing the Devin Townsend Band to build its own identity on the road. The group released a second full-length, Synchestra, in January 2006 , further cementing the band's blend of progressive metal and atmospheric songwriting. The lineup remained consistent throughout, with Brian "Beav" Waddell on guitar, Mike Young on bass, Ryan Van Poederooyen on drums, and Dave Young on keyboards backing Townsend's guitar, vocal, and production work. Both Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Band disbanded in 2006 when Townsend withdrew from touring to spend time with his family , closing the chapter on this particular incarnation of his music.
Though the band itself dissolved, its members did not disappear from Townsend's orbit. Despite the fact that the band only released two albums, the musicians who formed it continued to work with Townsend in various configurations on his later solo albums. In 2009, Townsend started the Devin Townsend Project, and after releasing Ki and Addicted that year, he returned to the stage in January 2010 with a band including Young on guitar and keyboards, Waddell on bass, Van Poederooyen on drums, and Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals , essentially reuniting the old chemistry under a new banner. Today Townsend remains a highly active and respected figure in progressive metal, still touring and recording, and the Devin Townsend Band era is remembered by fans as the moment his solo vision first found a true permanent band to bring it to life on stage.
