About Ugly

Given that Wayne Dennon's photography archive dates from 2002 onward and the shows were in 2007, the Detroit-based rock band "Ugly" (formed from Bridge and Outspoken members, active and touring around 2007) is the most plausible match for a US concert photography archive. I'll base the biography on this band. Ugly formed in the mid-2000s out of the wreckage of two Midwestern rock bands, Bridge and Outspoken. According to the origin story the group tells, Geo Teubl of Bridge and Frank Green of Outspoken first crossed paths at the Cleveland Music Festival in 2003, where the two bands played the Agora stage and the two men later got into a parking lot fight that cemented their friendship. When Outspoken broke up two years later, guitarist Kevin McCreery reached out to Teubl after hearing that Bridge had also parted ways, and the two began writing together, jamming with former Outspoken members Donnie Highland on drums and Frank Green on bass to form the band Ugly. Rooted in Detroit, Michigan, the band leaned into a raw, unpolished hard rock sound, with Detroit-based rock four-piece Ugly drawing on the same tradition as Detroit rockers like Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent and Kid Rock, pairing heavy guitar riffs and pounding drums with Geo Teubl's whiskey-soaked vocal delivery. The band's breakthrough came with the release of its self-titled debut album in the fall of 2007. Ugly signed with Rock Ridge Music to release the self-titled album on October 9, 2007 , produced by a heavyweight of the rock world: Rick Parashar, who had previously worked with Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and 3 Doors Down, helmed the eleven-track record. The album earned solid notices in the rock press, with one review calling it "pretty this sure isn't, this is rock n roll played by a bunch of guys that have cut a record to entertain people, playing their hearts out." Guitarist Kevin McCreery brought a notable pedigree to the lineup, having joined platinum-selling band Tantric for three years, touring with acts such as 3 Doors Down, Godsmack and Default before helping found Ugly.
