Mindless Self Indulgence

Mindless Self Indulgence formed in New York City in 1997, built around the volatile creative energy of frontman Jimmy Urine, whose manic mash-up cover of Method Man's "Bring the Pain" became a cover that was made by merging six different styles of the same cover into one song, which became the basis for the Mindless Self Indulgence sound. The band came together soon after when Urine was joined by Steve, Righ? on guitar, Urine's brother Markus Euringer on second guitar, and Kitty on drums, with the bass position later passing through Vanessa Y.T. before Lyn-Z took over. Early on, the band pressed a limited, deliberately abrasive demo and quickly earned a reputation as a chaotic, genre-blurring live act, drawing on punk rock, alternative rock, electronica, industrial, techno, hip hop, and breakbeat hardcore. The group's proper full-length debut, "Tight," arrived in 1999, and its outrageous live shows helped it land opening spots on tours with Rammstein and Insane Clown Posse. The 2000 major-label style follow-up, "Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy," raised the band's profile further and featured cover art from Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett. By the mid-2000s the classic lineup of Jimmy Urine, Steve Righ?, Lyn-Z, and Kitty was in place, and 2005's "You'll Rebel to Anything" became a genuine commercial breakthrough, going top 5 on the indie album chart and spinning off a pair of number 1 hits on the Dance chart, "Shut Me Up" and "Straight to Video." The band followed that with 2008's "If," which reached number 27 on the main album chart, and number 2 on the indie album chart, including five top 5 dance hits. MSI's career was defined as much by its relentless touring as by its records. In the summer of 2007 the band toured as part of the Revolution Stage of Projekt Revolution, a festival hosted by Linkin Park, and in January 2009 the band headlined the Kerrang! Relentless Energy Drink tour. Over the years the band shared stages with acts including Linkin Park, System of a Down, Korn, Sum 41, Insane Clown Posse, and Rammstein, while emerging artists such as My Chemical Romance, The Dresden Dolls, Rasputina, mc chris, The Birthday Massacre, Tub Ring and Dog Fashion Disco often opened for them. True to their independent streak, rather than signing traditional record contracts, the band licensed most of their albums to record labels, retaining ownership of the music. In 2013, after crowdfunding the effort, they released their sixth studio album, "How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence," funded through a Kickstarter campaign started on October 25, 2012, which reached its goal on December 24, 2012. The band's active output wound down after the 2015 release of "Pink," a collection featuring early recordings and covers of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, after which the band entered a period of hiatus. Frontman Jimmy Urine later pursued solo material under his given name, and in more recent years the group's legacy has been complicated by legal proceedings, though legal proceedings initiated against vocalist Jimmy Urine regarding historical allegations were dismissed with prejudice in 2024. Despite the fraught later chapters, MSI's fusion of punk aggression, electronic chaos, and confrontational showmanship left a clear mark on 2000s alternative and industrial music, and the band is still remembered for the sheer unpredictability of its live performances.
