About Chimaira

Chimaira formed in Cleveland, Ohio in August 1998, built around vocalist Mark Hunter and guitarist Jason Hager, who had each come from earlier Cleveland hardcore and metalcore outfits before joining forces. Hunter was approached by guitarist Jason Hager of the Cleveland metalcore band Ascension to form a new group, and together they recruited drummer Jason Genaro and bassist Andrew Ermlick, solidifying Chimaira's initial lineup. The band's name, derived from the word Chimera, a monstrous creature in Greek mythology, reflected the ferocity of their early sound, which blended nu metal, metalcore, and industrial elements. Their independent 2000 EP, This Present Darkness, built a local following and set the stage for a full-length debut, with the EP selling more than 10,000 copies by 2007 and paving the way for the group's first full-length album, Pass Out of Existence, released the following year. The band's breakthrough came after the track "Dead Inside" was performed on the short lived USA Network program Farmclub.com, an appearance that prompted Roadrunner Records to sign Chimaira. Their Roadrunner debut, Pass Out of Existence, arrived in October 2001, and by 2003 vocalist Mark Hunter reported the album had sold 44,000 copies in the United States alone. True national recognition followed with their sophomore effort, as the band achieved national and international fame with 2003's The Impossibility of Reason, an album every bit as heavy as anything by Slayer or Metallica, while touring on Ozzfest in 2003 and joining the European Road Rage tour that same year. The classic lineup that defined this era, Hunter, guitarists Rob Arnold and Matt DeVries, bassist Jim LaMarca, keyboardist/programmer Chris Spicuzza, and various drummers, became the version of the band most associated with Chimaira's rise in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement.
