Behemoth formed in Gdansk, Poland in 1991, when a fourteen-year-old Adam "Nergal" Darski assembled a trio with Baal Ravenlock on drums and Desecrator on guitar. The band's earliest work, circulated through demos like Endless Damnation and the influential tape ...From the Pagan Vastlands, established them within the raw, heathen-themed black metal underground before their sound began to shift. Until the late 1990s, the band played a traditional black metal style with heathen lyrical content, but soon changed to that of occult and thelemic themes written by their lead vocalist Nergal and Krzysztof Azarewicz. This evolution positioned them, alongside acts like Vader and Hate, as foundational figures in Poland's extreme metal scene.
The band's true breakthrough arrived with 1999's Satanica, which showed their presence in the blackened death metal scene, while retaining their own signature style characterized by the drum work of Inferno, multi-layered vocals and Middle Eastern influences. The lineup solidified further with bassist Orion joining for 2004's Demigod, an album that is now considered a landmark album within the Polish death metal scene, with Decibel Magazine notably including it in their Hall of Fame. Behemoth's classic quartet of Nergal, Inferno, Orion, and guitarist Seth carried the band through a run of acclaimed records including The Apostasy (2007), and their profile grew steadily through relentless touring, including early US dates and slots alongside major genre names.
The band's most significant career milestone came with 2014's The Satanist, released after Nergal's recovery from a serious leukemia diagnosis. The album became the band's highest charting debut ever , landing at number 34 on the Billboard 200, a feat Nergal called "unheard of… I don't think that ANY black or death metal artist reached a higher position on Billboard ever!" Behemoth followed with I Loved You at Your Darkest (2018) and Opvs Contra Natvram (2022), records that continued to widen their musical palette. Subsequent highlights displayed a wide musical vision that incorporated folk music, synthesizers, choirs, and orchestras, while still managing to retain their brutal, extreme metal sound. Their live shows became known for elaborate stage productions, and the band toured extensively across North America and Europe, sharing stages with artists such as Arch Enemy, Carcass, Slayer, and Lamb of God.
Behemoth remains active today, having issued their thirteenth album, The Shit Ov God, in 2025, and continuing to tour internationally with Nergal as the sole constant member across more than three decades. The band hasn't had a major lineup change in over two decades , and their reputation as one of extreme metal's most enduring and theatrical acts continues to grow, with Nergal also marking the 30th anniversary of the band's debut album Sventevith with special live performances in 2026. Their influence on blackened death metal is now widely acknowledged, with Loudwire once ranking them among the fifty greatest metal bands of all time.
For this archive, Behemoth occupies a small but memorable place in Wayne Dennon's decades of concert photography. Wayne photographed the band during a single 2007 show, capturing them in the same era that produced The Apostasy, and those images remain part of his lasting body of work. Today, 35 photographs from that night live on in the collection, and archive visitors have returned to view them 26,834 times, a testament to both the band's enduring fanbase and Wayne's eye for capturing extreme metal's raw intensity onstage.
