About ZZ Top

ZZ Top formed in Houston, Texas, in 1969, when guitarist Billy Gibbons, fresh from his psychedelic rock outfit Moving Sidewalks, assembled a new blues trio. The original line-up formed in Houston, Texas by Gibbons, organist Lanier Greig and drummer Dan Mitchell. The band's name itself grew out of Gibbons's fascination with musicians who used initials: Gibbons particularly noticed B.B. King and Z. Z. Hill, and thought of combining the two into "ZZ King", but considered it too similar to the original name, then figured that "king is at the top" which gave him the idea of naming the band "ZZ Top". The lineup solidified in 1970 when bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, both veterans of the rival Houston band American Blues, joined Gibbons, and ZZ Top played their first concert on February 10, 1970, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Beaumont, Texas, and released their debut album a year later . From the start, the trio drew on strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo , building a devoted following through relentless touring across Texas and the South.
