About Eric Johnson

Eric Johnson was born on August 17, 1954, in Austin, Texas, into a musical household, and began his path as a performer early. The son of an Austin physician, Eric was born in 1954 and began studying piano at age five, taking up guitar at age eleven and progressing quickly from Beatles and Ventures songs to Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and Django Reinhardt. At 15, Eric joined his first professional band, Mariani, which blended '60s era rock with psychedelia. He soon formed his own outfit in Austin, and during the 1970s, he ventured into jazz-rock fusion with the Electromagnets, which fans affectionately nicknamed "the Mahavishnu Orchestra of Texas." That group's ambitious, technically dazzling sound established Johnson's reputation as a prodigious young guitarist well before he ever released a solo record.
