About G3

G3 is not a conventional band but a rotating guitar supergroup and touring concept created by virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani. Conceived in 1995 by the multi-Grammy-nominated guitarist Joe Satriani, the inaugural G3 tour took place in 1996, bringing together three of the most iconic and virtuosic guitarists of their time: Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai. The idea grew out of Satriani's own frustration with the isolation of touring as a solo artist, as he later explained about pitching the concept to his booking agency, recalling he told them, "Thanks, guys. I've got a career and I can play whatever I want, but how come I'm all alone?" That first run of shows, held in the fall of 1996, paired Satriani, Vai, and Johnson with opening acts Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Adrian Legg, and quickly established the format that would define G3 for decades: each guitarist performing a solo set with his own band before all three joined together for a closing all-star jam.
