About Paul Gilbert

Paul Gilbert was born on November 6, 1966, in Carbondale, Illinois, and raised largely in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where he began playing guitar as a young child and was already touring local clubs and earning notice in Guitar Player magazine by his mid-teens. In 1984, Gilbert relocated to Los Angeles to attend the Guitar Institute of Technology, becoming an instructor there the following year . It was during this period that he co-founded the Los Angeles speed-metal band Racer X, joining forces with Jeff Martin, John Alderete, and Harry Gschoesser to create a band built around Gilbert's blazing, technical guitar work. He was hired as a GIT instructor in 1985 and recorded Racer X's debut album Street Lethal soon after. The band quickly built a devoted following on the strength of Gilbert's speed and precision, though wider commercial success remained elusive in the United States even as the group found a strong audience in Japan.
