Clutch is an American rock band from Germantown, Maryland, formed in 1991 by four high school friends from Seneca Valley High School who have played together with virtually no lineup changes for more than three decades. The original four — guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines, drummer Jean-Paul Gaster, and an early vocalist named Roger Smalls — briefly performed under the names Glut Trip and Moral Minority before settling on Clutch, a name chosen for its automotive reference and blunt one-syllable punch. Smalls departed almost immediately, replaced by Neil Fallon, a schoolmate who became the band's permanent frontman, rhythm guitarist, and lyrical voice. Fallon's distinctive baritone, his dense and allusive songwriting, and his commanding stage presence would become one of the most recognizable personalities in underground rock.
Clutch began as a hardcore punk outfit, releasing the Pitchfork EP in 1991 and the Passive Restraints EP in 1992 through Earache Records before landing a deal with EastWest and releasing their debut full-length, Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes and Undeniable Truths, in 1993. Their self-titled second album (1995), released on Columbia Records, marked the first major evolution of their sound — heavier, groovier, and blues-infused in ways that began to separate them from the hardcore scene they'd emerged from. Each subsequent album pushed further into stoner rock, Southern rock, and blues territory: Elephant Riders (1998), Pure Rock Fury (2001), Blast Tyrant (2004), Robot Hive/Exodus (2005), From Beale Street to Oblivion (2007), and Strange Cousins from the West (2009). In 2008, the band founded their own imprint, Weathermaker Music, taking full control of their recordings, releases, and merchandise — a move that gave them creative independence and a direct relationship with their fanbase that most bands their size never achieve.
The Weathermaker era produced some of the most acclaimed work of their career. Earth Rocker (2013), produced by Machine, debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and was named one of the 50 Best Rock Albums of the 2010s by Classic Rock Magazine. Psychic Warfare (2015) debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 — another entry on Classic Rock's same decade-defining list. Book of Bad Decisions (2018), produced by Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell, peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 and hit number one on the Hard Rock Albums chart, with Rolling Stone describing it as "bathed in the grit and liberal fuzz tone that have made their live shows legendary." Sunrise on Slaughter Beach (2022) continued the run as their thirteenth studio album. Book of Bad Decisions also topped the UK Rock Albums chart. The band has built one of the most loyal and devoted cult followings in rock, a worldwide audience that Lambgoat described in 2004 as evidence that "Clutch etched themselves a name in the pantheon of great rock bands."
Live, Clutch are a machine. They have toured with Slayer, System of a Down, Marilyn Manson, Pantera, Mastodon, and Killswitch Engage, among many others, and have headlined their own Earth Rocker Festival. Fallon has also performed as a guest vocalist with multiple other acts and fronted supergroup The Company Band. The Bakerton Group, an instrumental side project featuring all four Clutch members, operates in a more psychedelic blues-jazz direction and has released several albums alongside the main band's output. Neil Fallon underwent surgery in 2013 for cervical spinal stenosis and herniated discs — an injury he described as the cumulative result of decades of headbanging — and the experience directly informed the lyrics of the album that followed.

Clutch are a singular band — built on groove and blues rather than flash, rooted in a DIY ethic that has never wavered, and fronted by one of the most intellectually distinctive vocalists the genre has produced.
