Bury Your Dead

Bury Your Dead formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 2001, beginning as a side project of guitarist Brendan "Slim" MacDonald and drummer Mark Castillo, who were both members of the metalcore band Hamartia. Growing tired of Hamartia's technical style, the pair began Bury Your Dead as a vehicle to focus more on mosh-worthy hardcore, drawing influence from Sevendust and Crowbar. They recruited bassist Rich Casey and vocalist Joe Krewko, and the Massachusetts group soon became a full-time act, playing shows throughout New England. Word of their unbridled energy and destructive live show spread quickly around the East Coast hardcore scenes, drawing the attention of Alveran/Eulogy Recordings. The band's breakthrough came with their debut full-length, You Had Me at Hello, issued in March 2003 on the Germany-based label Alveran, though the band had actually imploded about a month prior to the album's release. The lineup regrouped, and late in 2003 they signed to Victory Records. Their sophomore effort, Cover Your Tracks, was released October 19, 2004 on Victory Records and featured re-recordings of two earlier songs, with every track named after a Tom Cruise movie. The band's profile continued to rise with 2006's Beauty and the Breakdown, fronted by vocalist Mat Bruso, whose intense delivery became closely associated with the band during this era. In 2008, following Bruso's departure, the band released the self-titled album Bury Your Dead, which sold 4,700 copies in its first week and entered the Billboard 200 at number 176, and featured a guitar solo from Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge and Creed on the track "Year One." Over the following decade Bury Your Dead became known almost as much for its revolving door lineup as for its music. Vocalist Myke Terry, formerly of Cassius, stepped in and the band released a self-titled album in March 2008 followed by the more melody-driven It's Nothing Personal in 2009, before Terry and drummer Castillo both departed and the group signed to Mediaskare Records, with Bruso returning as vocalist and Dustin Schoenhofer of Walls of Jericho replacing Castillo on drums for 2011's Mosh 'N Roll. That album marked a return to the band's hardcore roots, before the group went on a long studio hiatus that eventually ended with the release of the five-track EP We Are Bury Your Dead in 2019. In early 2019, after years of shifting membership, the band announced a new deal with Stay Sick Recordings. Across their career, the band's ranks included past members Steve Kent, Joe Krewko, Jesse Viens, Myke Terry, Michael Crafter, Mike Nunez, Eric Ellis, Dan O'Connor, Rich Gaccione, Jay Crowe, Chris Towning, Matt Lacasse, Dustin Schoenhofer, Chris Sansone, and Sean Chamilian, making them one of the most fluid rosters in the metalcore scene.
