2 Cents formed in Malibu, California, taking shape as brothers Adam and Dave O'Rourke bonded over a shared love of heavy music. The band was formed by brothers, Adam and Dave O'Rourke who shared a mutual love of metal bands like Pantera and Slayer as well as Southern California punk bands such as Pennywise and Black Flag. That fusion of aggressive metal and raw punk energy defined the group from the outset, and the band released their first album, Victims Of Pop Culture, on Centsless Records in 2003. By the mid 2000s the lineup had solidified around bassist Jesse Fishman, guitarist Dean Woodward, and brothers Adam and Dave O'Rourke on front man/drums and guitar respectively. The band's breakthrough arrived with their major label debut. The band first gained national attention with the release of Lost At Sea on Gotizm/Atlantic Records in the summer of 2006, a record produced by veteran producer Matt Hyde that received positive reviews from the metal community but little promotion from the label. Rather than let that lack of label support slow them down, the band embarked on a grueling tour schedule for over two years, appearing at festivals such as Rock on the Range and the HFStival with some of the biggest names in metal and rock, and also appeared on major package tours like Sounds of the Underground while gaining attention for performing at several maximum security youth facilities. Critics of the era described the group's furious live chemistry, noting that "frontman/drummer extraordinaire Adam O'Rourke, bassist Jesse Fishman and guitarists Dean Woodward and Dave O'Rourke" brought an "unhinged abandon" to their Atlantic debut that reviewers connected to genuine passion rather than mere spectacle.
