Bullet for My Valentine formed in Bridgend, Wales in 1998, initially performing under the name Jeff Killed John, a project born out of covers of bands like Metallica and Nirvana. The band formed as Jeff Killed John in 1998 by Matthew Tuck, Michael Paget, Nick Crandle, and Michael Thomas while studying at Bridgend College. Financial difficulties dictated the name change, which was followed by a change in music direction. In 2002, the band secured a five-album deal with Sony BMG, and by 2003 bassist Jason "Jay" James had joined the lineup alongside founding members Matt Tuck, Michael "Padge" Paget, and Michael "Moose" Thomas, cementing the classic quartet that would carry the band into its breakthrough years.
The band's true breakthrough came with their debut album, The Poison, released on 3 October 2005 in the United Kingdom and on 14 February 2006 in the United States to coincide with Valentine's Day, hence their band name. Releasing their debut full-length in the UK, the album immediately shot to number one at rock radio, and it went on to become a significant commercial success, earning gold certifications from both the Recording Industry Association of America and the British Phonographic Industry, as well as a platinum certification in Germany . The record spawned enduring anthems like "Tears Don't Fall" and "4 Words (To Choke Upon)" and helped the band become part of a wider wave of British metal breaking into the mainstream. Momentum continued with their second album, Scream Aim Fire, which was released on January 29, 2008 and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 , followed by Fever, which was released on April 26, 2010 and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 .
Throughout their career, Bullet for My Valentine became one of the defining British metal acts of their generation. They started collecting an enviable cabinet of awards beginning with their Best Newcomer award at the Welsh Music Awards in 2004, then won the Best British Band Award twice at the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards in 2006 and 2010, and were regular award recipients at the Kerrang! Awards including Best British Band three years in a row from 2008 to 2010. The band has sold over one million albums in the United States and two million albums worldwide and are the most-successful act in the Kerrang! Awards category of "Best British Band" with three wins. The lineup saw significant change over the years: original bassist Jason James departed in 2015, and Jamie Mathias took over bass and backing vocal duties, while former Pitchshifter drummer Jason Bowld joined in 2016 to replace founding drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas . The band continued releasing acclaimed records including Temper Temper (2013), Venom (2015), Gravity (2018), and a self-titled seventh album in 2021, alongside relentless global touring and festival appearances at events like Download Festival.
The band remains active and continues to build on its legacy. In 2024 the band celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut album, The Poison, with a reissue and a world tour, and announced that work had begun on their next studio album, slated to appear in 2025. Widely regarded as one of the most influential metalcore acts to emerge from the UK, their pop sensibilities brought them to the mainstream with career-changing albums and chart-topping singles, making them one of the biggest U.K. metal outfits since Iron Maiden. Decades after their formation, Tuck and Paget remain the band's constant creative core, still touring behind a catalog that helped define a generation of heavy music.
