About Children of Bodom
Children of Bodom formed in 1993 in Espoo, Finland, originally under the name Inearthed. The founding lineup brought together guitarist and vocalist Alexi Laiho, drummer Jaska Raatikainen, bassist Henkka Seppälä, and guitarist Alexander Kuoppala, later rounded out by keyboardist Janne Wirman. After starting out as a thrash-metal combo, the founding members soon found elements of classic heavy metal creeping into their music, and after taking in keyboardist Janne Wirman to complete their lineup, they honed their combination of old school black metal, classic heavy, and death metal vocals into a distinctive sound. The band took its name from one of the biggest murder mysteries in Finnish crime history, the murders at Lake Bodom. The group's early albums built a strong reputation in Finland and across Europe, but it was their third studio album that truly launched them onto the international stage. Follow the Reaper was released in Finland on 30 October 2000 by Spinefarm Records, and internationally in January 2001 by Nuclear Blast Records. The album became the band's first to receive a gold certification in Finland, with subsequent studio albums acquiring the same status. Reviewers have long pointed to this record as the turning point where the band's "more refined approach to songwriting" made their complex compositions accessible to a much wider audience , helping pave the way for their breakthrough in North America. The classic lineup of Laiho, Raatikainen, Seppälä, and Wirman, later joined by additional guitarists including Roope Latvala and eventually Daniel Freyberg, became one of the most recognizable faces of modern melodic death metal.
