Evergrey

Evergrey formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, coming together as a progressive metal band formed in 1993 by guitarist and vocalist Tom S. Englund and guitarist Dan Bronell. The band was established as a progressive power metal act, differing from the melodic death metal style commonly associated with the Gothenburg music scene, setting them apart from the moment they picked up their instruments. Evergrey's lyrical themes and visual presentation have consistently focused on darker subject matter, a signature that would define the band's identity for decades to come. After rounding out a stable lineup with bassist Daniel Nöjd, drummer Patrick Carlsson, and keyboardist Will Chandra, The Dark Discovery was recorded in 1996 and released in 1998, and Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy was recorded and released in 1999. The band's true creative and critical ascent arrived in the early 2000s. Their true breakthrough proved to be their third album In Search of Truth, a Concept Album about alien abductions, loosely based on Whitley Strieber's novel Communion. That album was notable for being the band's first full-blown concept, produced by King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque, who also guested on slide guitar, with the sound maturing thanks to songwriting contributions from Sven Karlsson and Henrik Danhage. The momentum continued with Recreation Day (2003) and The Inner Circle (2004), cementing Evergrey among the elite of progressive power metal. Although debuting back in 1998, this Gothenburg outfit only later received the international acclaim due them, molding the various pedigrees of their countrymen into one distinctive sound that supreme musicianship prized by perfectionists, yet intense enough to win the blackened hearts of those more primordial. Their 2004 concert at Stora Teatern in Gothenburg was captured on their first live release, A Night to Remember - Live 2004, issued in 2005 by InsideOut Music, featuring a setlist spanning early tracks like "Blinded," "End of Your Days," and "A Touch of Blessing," released across formats including CD, DVD, and a limited CD+DVD bundle. Evergrey's career arc has been marked by both remarkable longevity and significant turbulence. The band experienced several lineup changes throughout its history, particularly during periods of instability in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, often stemming from mutual decisions amid creative or personal differences, and these departures contributed to a temporary hiatus after 2010, before the band reformed with returning and new members by 2014. Despite the shifting personnel, the core constant has been founder Tom S. Englund on vocals and guitar since 1995. Notable later contributions came from bassist Johan Niemann and guitarist Marcus Jidell, with the 2011 album Glorious Collision marking the first Evergrey album to feature bassist Johan Niemann, and the only album to have guitarist Marcus Jidell, later of Avatarium, and drummer Hannes Van Dahl, who left for Sabaton. Englund himself branched out over the years, notably joining American progressive metal band Redemption and contributing guest vocals to Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Ayreon project.
