Tommy Lee

Tommy Lee, born Thomas Lee Bass on October 3, 1962, in Athens, Greece, moved with his family to California as a toddler and grew up steeped in Los Angeles rock culture. Nikki Sixx was a bassist looking to form a theatrical band that would specialize in anthemic heavy metal, and when he saw Lee play, he knew he had found his drummer, successfully convincing Lee to leave Suite 19 and form the nucleus of what would become Mötley Crüe. The drummer changed his name to Tommy Lee, guitarist Mick Mars joined the fledgling band shortly afterwards, and Lee recommended a singer from his high-school days, Vince Neil, who landed the gig during the first jam session. Mötley Crüe quickly built a fanatical local following, issuing their debut album, Too Fast for Love, on their own independent Leathür label, before Elektra Records signed the band and reissued the record. Mötley Crüe broke into the mainstream after touring with KISS, and Lee's albums with the band, including Shout at the Devil, Girls, Girls, Girls and Dr. Feelgood, turned the group into superstars of the era. Tommy Lee first gained fame as the drummer for the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe, who came to national prominence after touring with KISS in 1983, and the band was soon famous both for its maniacal concerts and its maniacal behavior offstage, with the heavily-tattooed Lee often leading the parade. With the classic lineup of Lee, Sixx, Mars and Neil intact, the band accumulated worldwide album sales exceeding 80 million, seven platinum or multi-platinum albums, 22 Top 40 mainstream rock hits, six Top 20 pop singles, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and three Grammy nominations. Lee became known in the drumming world for his showmanship, and he became known as a hard-hitting rock drummer with crazy drum solos where he spins or goes above the crowd with his drum kit, a solo that became an essential part of Mötley Crüe's performances. Lee's career arc has been marked by dramatic swings between his main band and outside ventures. He played with Motley from 1981 until 1999, when he quit the band to pursue his solo career, having had bad relations with Vince Neil and feeling it was time for a change, sending a letter through his lawyer stating that he wasn't returning. During that split, he formed Methods of Mayhem in 1999 on the eve of his divorce from Pamela Anderson, and the band's self-titled debut album was released in late 1999 and went on to be certified gold. He later returned to Mötley Crüe, and would ride out the rest of the 2000s quitting and rejoining Mötley Crüe, playing on the band's 2008 album Saints of Los Angeles, reuniting and splitting with Anderson, and lending his talents to various side projects. The band famously staged what was billed as a definitive farewell in the mid-2010s, with the iconic rock band announcing its Final Tour and ultimate retirement in January 2014, solidified by signing a formal Cessation of Touring Agreement effective at the end of 2015. That vow proved short-lived: the members confirmed their intention to return in 2019 and completed a run of 36 large-scale stadium shows with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett, with more taking place in 2023. In recent years Lee has continued to perform with a reunited Mötley Crüe while also pursuing electronic music and DJ work, and remains an outspoken, headline-generating figure in rock. He pushed through injury for the band's big comeback, as Mötley Crüe's drummer had to quit just five songs into the band's opening night set of their long-delayed Stadium Tour, telling the crowd he couldn't continue after breaking several ribs two weeks earlier, though he had gutted it out through the opening songs. Beyond the Crüe, he explored everything from feel-good country-pop on 2005's Tommyland: The Ride to abrasive EDM on 2020's Andro , cementing his reputation as rock's most restless and provocative showman, a drummer whose flamboyant stage antics and turbulent personal life kept him permanently in the spotlight across five decades.
