Thrice is an American rock band from Irvine, California, formed in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Dustin Kensrue and lead guitarist Teppei Teranishi while the two were in high school, later adding bassist Eddie Breckenridge and drummer Riley Breckenridge to complete the classic lineup. The band emerged from the Southern California post-hardcore scene with a sound that evolved dramatically across their career — beginning with the aggressive melodic hardcore of their early albums before expanding into increasingly ambitious and experimental territory that drew from progressive rock, ambient music, and art rock while retaining the emotional intensity and lyrical depth that defined them from the beginning.
Their early albums Identity Crisis (2001) and The Illusion of Safety (2002) built a devoted following in the post-hardcore community, but it was The Artist in the Ambulance (2003) on Island Records that broke them to a mainstream audience, debuting at number 53 on the Billboard 200 and producing the title track that became a staple of post-hardcore radio. Vheissu (2005) represented a significant artistic leap — a darker, more atmospheric and musically complex album that divided some fans who preferred their earlier aggression but earned widespread critical acclaim as one of the most ambitious rock albums of its year. The band's willingness to prioritize artistic growth over commercial consistency became their defining characteristic.
The Alchemy Index (2007-2008), released as four separate EPs representing the classical elements of fire, water, air, and earth, was their most audacious creative statement — a project of genuine conceptual ambition that demonstrated a compositional range few rock bands had attempted. Beggars (2009) and Major/Minor (2011) continued their evolution before the band went on hiatus in 2012 as Kensrue focused on other projects. Their reunion produced To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere (2016), Palms (2018), and Horizons/East (2021) — albums that confirmed Thrice as one of the most creatively uncompromising and consistently excellent bands in American rock, their catalog representing one of the more substantial artistic achievements of their generation.
