About Dark Tranquillity

Dark Tranquillity formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1989, originally under the name Septic Broiler, founded by guitarists Mikael Stanne and Niklas Sundin. Not long after, three additional members, Anders Fridén, Anders Jivarp and Martin Henriksson, joined the line-up. In 1990, the band recorded a demo cassette tape entitled Enfeebled Earth before they would change their name to Dark Tranquillity and change their musical style. The band's early lineup on their 1993 debut, Skydancer, consisted of vocalist Anders Friden, guitarists Niklas Sundin and Mikael Stanne, bassist Martin Henriksson, and drummer Anders Jivarp. Alongside acts like At the Gates and In Flames, they are considered one of the pioneering acts of the Gothenburg metal scene. Through the 1990s the band refined its sound across several releases, and 1999's Projector proved controversial for early fans due to its pronounced use of electronics, but the group shifted back again on 2000's ultra-heavy Haven, and by 2002's Damage Done, they had emerged with a mature sound that wed both approaches. Their true commercial breakthrough came with 2005's Character, which proved their commercial breakthrough; it peaked at number three in Sweden and charted across Europe. Following that success, they doubled down on that approach for 2007's charting Fiction, spending 22 months on the road, and 2010's We Are the Void. By this point Stanne had settled into his lasting role as vocalist, joined by longtime members Sundin, Jivarp, Henriksson, and keyboardist Martin Brändström, who had subsequently joined the group as an official member after Projector's release.
