Cathedral

Cathedral — Concert Photography by Wayne Dennon

About Cathedral

Cathedral formed in Coventry, England in 1989, born from vocalist Lee Dorrian's departure from grindcore pioneers Napalm Death. In July 1989, Lee Dorrian left Napalm Death because he was reportedly tiring of the punk scene and did not like the death metal direction which Napalm Death was taking. He assembled a lineup consisting of Dorrian, guitarists Mark Griffiths and Gary Jennings, plus drummer Andy Baker , with Griffiths having connected with Dorrian over a shared love of doom bands. The band's early sound was uncompromisingly heavy and slow, drawing on Black Sabbath's plodding foundations rather than the extreme metal assault Dorrian had just left behind, and they quickly signed to the influential Earache Records label.
