Faktion formed in Denton, Texas in 2002, born from a group of friends who had crossed paths at the University of North Texas. The band was formed by friends Marshal Dutton, Josh Franklin, Jeremy Blackstock, and Jeremy "Brink" Coan. Faktion formed in 2002 as a four-piece group after the band members met at the University of North Texas. Originally, guitarist Marshal Dutton was the band's vocalist, but frontman Ryan Gibbs was recruited and the band became a five-piece group. Many of the members had grown up in small West Texas towns, and that background shaped an early sound built on the emotional extremes of hard rock and post-grunge songwriting.
The band's breakthrough came after years of grinding it out on the local circuit. In 2004, the band independently recorded and released an EP titled Make a Dent, and in October 2004, the band signed a record deal with Roadrunner Records. Their self titled debut album Faktion was produced by Brett Hestla and Justin Thomas, recorded at Gridlock Studios in Orlando, Florida, and released on March 21, 2006. That record, featuring Gibbs on lead vocals alongside guitarists Dutton and Franklin, bassist Jeremy Coan, and drummer Jeremy Moore, became the definitive lineup of the band's early years and introduced tracks like "Take It All Away" and "Six O'Clock" to rock radio audiences. That following summer, after the release, the band gained a spot opening for Mercy Fall and Seether on Seether's Karma and Effect tour , a run that put Faktion in front of much wider audiences and marked the peak of their national visibility.
The years after that breakthrough brought turbulence as much as momentum. Just eight months after their album was released, the band announced they had parted ways with Roadrunner, and the band independently released a five track b-side EP on March 20, 2007. The album was their one and only featuring Ryan Gibbs as singer, after he left the band in 2007 and would be replaced by Aaron Pose. With Pose as lead singer the band released the Ignite What's Inside EP in February 2008 and Crash Ashore EP in October 2008. Through these lineup shifts the band continued to tour steadily, sharing stages with acts like Puddle of Mudd, Soil, Seven Mary Three, and 10 Years, and later with Hinder and The Veer Union, keeping Faktion active on the regional and national rock circuit throughout the decade.
By the turn of the new decade, Faktion's run had reached its natural end. The last Faktion concert was on December 04, 2009 at Diamond Ballroom in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with Hinder and The Veer Union. Officially, the band's years active are listed as 2002 to 2011 , closing out a run that never produced a chart-topping hit but left behind a loyal following in the Texas rock scene and a reputation as a hard-touring band that survived a major lineup overhaul without ever losing its identity. Today Faktion is remembered as part of the wave of early 2000s post-grunge and alternative rock acts that filled arenas and clubs alongside bigger-name headliners, a working band whose legacy lives mostly in the memories of the fans who caught them live.
It is in exactly those club and arena settings that Wayne Dennon crossed paths with the band, training his lens on Faktion across three different shows in 2006, the same year their debut album hit shelves and they landed a coveted opening slot on the road. Those three nights, captured across three different cities in two states, resulted in 51 photographs that now live on in this archive, images that have drawn 38,416 views from visitors revisiting a band whose story, like so many of the ones Wayne documented, is best remembered through the moments frozen on stage.
