Megadeth

About Megadeth

Megadeth was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine shortly after his firing from Metallica. Mustaine spent two years with Metallica before he was kicked out of the group in 1983, allegedly over his substance abuse, and immediately following his firing, he formed Megadeth with bassist Dave Ellefson, Slayer guitarist Kerry King, and drummer Lee Rauc. That initial lineup proved unstable, and this lineup was extremely short-lived, and Mustaine and Ellefson soon recruited guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson. From the start, the band distinguished itself with technically demanding musicianship and dark, aggressive songwriting, quickly becoming part of the "big four" of the genre, along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer, bands that expanded on the typical metal blueprint by speeding up tempos and putting an emphasis on lightning-fast technical guitar skills, with Mustaine's nihilistic lyrics and the band's unrelenting musical attack resulting in a series of early thrash classics. Megadeth's ascent accelerated through the late 1980s and peaked creatively and commercially in the early 1990s. Three albums virtually define Megadeth: 1986's Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?, a thrash classic; 1992's Countdown to Extinction, the band's most commercially successful album that brought them to the mainstream; and Rust in Peace, released September 24, 1990, widely considered the band's greatest creative achievement. Rust in Peace introduced a legendary lineup, as it was the first Megadeth album to feature guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza , and the record went on to be considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The follow-up, Countdown to Extinction, pushed the band further into the mainstream: the album entered the Billboard 200 at number 2, making it the band's highest charting album at the time, and it eventually achieved double platinum status, becoming their most commercially successful album. Singles like "Symphony of Destruction" brought the band significant radio and MTV exposure, and "Symphony of Destruction" topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and received heavy rotation on MTV, broadening the band's audience beyond thrash metal enthusiasts. Megadeth's history has been defined by extraordinary lineup turnover around the singular constant of Dave Mustaine. Over more than four decades, Megadeth has featured a total of 22 members across various roles, with Mustaine serving as the sole constant figure and primary songwriter, while the group has experienced frequent lineup shifts that have shaped its evolving sound and discography. The band weathered a major setback when Megadeth disbanded in 2002 after Mustaine suffered a severe nerve injury to his left arm, but following extensive physical therapy, Mustaine reformed the band in 2004 and released The System Has Failed, followed by United Abominations in 2007, with the albums debuting on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #18 and #8, respectively. The band continued to chart strongly, as Megadeth's twelfth studio album, Endgame, released September 15, 2009, debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200, marking the band's fifth top 10 album. Recognition finally came at the Grammys decades into their career, and Mustaine has released sixteen studio albums, sold over 50 million records worldwide, earned six platinum certifications, and won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2017 for the title track of Dystopia. Megadeth remains active today, continuing to tour and record with Mustaine still at the helm alongside a more recent lineup. The band's current lineup includes consistent member Mustaine, bassist James LoMenzo (2006 to 2010, and since 2021), drummer Dirk Verbeuren (since 2016), and guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari (since 2023). Their legacy as one of the architects of thrash metal remains firmly intact, cemented by their status alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax as pioneers who helped create and popularize the genre, and their influence continues to echo through generations of technical and thrash metal musicians who cite Rust in Peace and Peace Sells as foundational texts of the style.
