Black Label Society was formed in Los Angeles in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Zakk Wylde, who had already made his name as Ozzy Osbourne's lead guitarist since 1987. In May 1998, after limited commercial success with Book of Shadows, Zakk Wylde and drummer Phil Ondich recorded what became Black Label Society's debut album Sonic Brew, and it was decided, rather than the album being another Zakk Wylde solo album, that they would form a long term band. John DeServio, who previously worked with Zakk Wylde as a temporary replacement in Pride & Glory, joined as the band's bassist for the album's tour , while Nick Catanese would be retained as the second guitarist in the band, having previously toured as rhythm guitarist for the Book Of Shadows tour. On these early records, Wylde played every instrument except for the drums, including vocals, guitars, piano, and bass guitar , giving the band's early sound a raw, one-man-vision intensity rooted in Southern rock and heavy metal.
The band's momentum built steadily through the early 2000s with releases like Stronger Than Death, 1919 Eternal, and The Blessed Hellride, supported by touring slots on Ozzfest. Their true commercial breakthrough came with 2005's Mafia, released on Artemis Records, which became the band's sixth studio album, released on March 8, 2005, and one of the band's most commercially successful releases, selling over 250,000 copies in the United States. The album was ranked number 15 on the Billboard Album Chart in 2005 , and its track "In This River" carried special weight as it was written before the death of Zakk Wylde's friend and fellow guitarist Dimebag Darrell, but has since been dedicated to him . The classic lineup during this era, Wylde, Catanese, DeServio, and drummer Craig Nunenmacher, cemented Black Label Society's reputation as a ferocious live act.
The band's career continued with notable lineup shifts and label changes. In 2006, the band left Artemis Records and signed to Roadrunner Records, releasing the album Shot to Hell, before parting ways with Roadrunner in June 2007. Drummer Craig Nunenmacher left the band in February 2010, and was replaced by Will Hunt, of Dark New Day and Evanescence. The band pushed forward with albums like Order of the Black (2010) and Catacombs of the Black Vatican (2014), continuing to chart internationally and solidify their standing as, in the words of their label, "one of the most powerful live bands of their generation." Throughout, Wylde balanced Black Label Society with his ongoing role as Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist, touring relentlessly between both projects.

For more than 25 years, Black Label Society has stood as one of heavy music's most enduring and unmistakable forces, built on a powerful blend of crushing riffs, blues-drenched grooves, soaring guitar leads, and unexpectedly vulnerable balladry.
