Whitesnake are an English rock band formed in London in 1978 by vocalist David Coverdale following his departure from Deep Purple, where he had served as lead singer from 1973 to 1976. Coverdale assembled Whitesnake as a vehicle for a bluesier, more groove-oriented hard rock sound than Deep Purple's heavier approach, drawing heavily from the British blues rock tradition of Alexis Korner and John Mayall that had influenced so many of the classic rock acts of the previous decade. The early Whitesnake lineup featured an extraordinary concentration of talent including guitarist Micky Moody, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice โ both Deep Purple alumni โ and developed a sound rooted in slow blues and hard rock that built a strong following in the United Kingdom through relentless touring.
