Sponge

Sponge — Concert Photography by Wayne Dennon

About Sponge

Sponge formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1992, growing out of the ashes of an earlier hard rock band called Loudhouse. Loudhouse had consisted of vocalist Kenny Mugwump, drummer Vinnie Dombroski, bassist Tim Cross, guitarist Mike Cross, with second guitarist Joey Mazzola added near the end, before the band released one album and disbanded in 1992, after which the members minus Mugwump formed Sponge alongside drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, with Dombroski switching from drums to vocals. Before their first live show in 1993, the venue owner said he did not have enough letters to spell the band's original name on the marquee, so they renamed themselves Sponge and began performing in bars and clubs around Detroit. They were recognized early on for a dual-guitar sound reminiscent of the MC5 , a nod to their hometown's hard rock lineage.
