Soilwork formed in Helsingborg, Sweden, in late 1995, when vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid and guitarist Peter Wichers began the project originally under the name Inferior Breed before changing to Soilwork in 1996 . The group's original lineup also included guitarist Ludvig Svartz, bassist Carl-Gustav Döös, and drummer Jimmy Persson . Emerging alongside genre pioneers like In Flames, Arch Enemy, and Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork were instrumental in infusing punishing Gothenburg-style death metal with European power metal majesty , quickly establishing themselves as a distinctive voice within Sweden's melodic death metal scene with the release of their raw, uncompromising debut.
The band's true breakthrough arrived a decade later. Debuting in 1998 with the uncompromising Steel Bath Suicide, the group hit their stride in 2005 with the release of their metalcore-leaning sixth full-length effort, Stabbing the Drama, which saw them crystallize their sound and helped break them overseas . The follow-up pushed them even further into the spotlight: Sworn to a Great Divide was Soilwork's biggest commercial success at the time of its release, selling approximately 5,000 copies in its first week in the U.S., charting at No. 148, and reaching No. 2 on the Top Heatseekers . That album also marked a lineup shift, as Daniel Antonsson replaced founding member Peter Wichers on guitar after his late 2005 departure , while Devin Townsend contributed vocal production on the record .
Over nearly three decades, Soilwork has weathered numerous lineup changes while continuing to evolve. The band has seen several lineup changes over its history, with former members contributing significantly to the band's evolution from its melodic death metal roots to broader heavy metal explorations , and the sole constant member is Strid, who has been joined over the years by keyboardist Sven Karlsson since 2001, guitarist Sylvain Coudret since 2008, drummer Bastian Thusgaard since 2016, bassist Rasmus Ehrnborn since 2022, and guitarist Simon Johansson since 2023 . Subsequent releases like The Living Infinite (2013), Verkligheten (2019), and Övergivenheten (2022) continued to beat the drum of both melody and might, solidifying Soilwork's reputation as one of Swedish melodic death metal's most versatile and venerable exports . The band also endured tragedy in 2022 when guitarist and songwriter David Andersson died at the age of 47 .
Soilwork remains active into the mid-2020s, continuing to write and perform. As of 2026, Soilwork is working on a new studio album , carrying forward a legacy built on nearly thirty years of melodic death metal craftsmanship and a reputation as one of the genre's most enduring and adaptable acts. Their influence on the broader melodic death metal and metalcore scenes remains widely acknowledged among fans and critics alike.
For this archive, Soilwork holds a modest but meaningful place. Wayne Dennon photographed the band on one occasion back in 2005, right as Stabbing the Drama was breaking them to wider audiences, and the 35 photographs from that night remain preserved here as part of his lasting body of concert work. Visitors have returned to view those images 25,543 times over the years, a testament to the enduring connection between Soilwork's fans and the moment Wayne captured through his lens.
