Pearl Jam formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990, rising from the ashes of Mother Love Bone after that band's singer Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose. Pearl Jam came into being in Seattle in 1990 when Gossard and Ament of the glam-influenced rock combo Mother Love Bone decided to form a new band following the death of their group's lead singer, Andrew Wood. After a few months, Gossard started practicing with fellow Seattle guitarist Mike McCready, whose band, Shadow, had broken up; McCready in turn encouraged Gossard to reconnect with Ament. The group briefly recorded under the name Mookie Blaylock, borrowed from a professional basketball player, before the band settled on the words pearl and jam separately, the latter reportedly after seeing musician Neil Young in concert and admiring his "jam session" style. The original members were lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, lead guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen. The band's breakthrough came with its debut album, Ten, released in August 1991. Unlike Nirvana's Nevermind, which hit big quickly, Pearl Jam's debut LP was a late bloomer, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 more than a year after its release, riding the wave of three hit singles, "Alive," "Even Flow" and "Jeremy," whose accompanying videos garnered increased rotation on MTV. The success of "Jeremy" proved pivotal: the single received Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance in 1993, and Pearl Jam received four awards at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards for its music video, including Video of the Year and Best Group Video. Alongside Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam became a defining act of the Seattle grunge explosion, with a classic lineup of Vedder, Gossard, Ament, and McCready that would remain the band's core for the rest of its history.
