About Otep

Otep formed in Los Angeles in November 2000, brought together by singer frontwoman Otep Shamaya , an artist whose stage name is an anagram for "poet." The original lineup was built around Shamaya's Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of singing alongside a crew of musicians known as Rob, Moke, and eViL j, and the band quickly established a reputation built entirely on the strength of its live show rather than any recording. The band was signed after only four shows, without a demo, strictly on the power of their live performance, so impressive that Sharon Osbourne offered the unsigned act a spot on the 2001 Ozzfest tour . That association with Ozzfest would define the band's early rise, as they were invited to play Ozzfest before they had signed to a label after Sharon Osbourne witnessed their fourth live performance , and Otep soon became fixtures on that stage, eventually playing Ozzfest several times .
