Nickelback formed in 1995 in the small town of Hanna, Alberta, Canada, built around brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger alongside their friend Ryan Peake, with Chad's cousin Brandon Kroeger on drums in the earliest lineup. Nickelback comprises lead guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, rhythm guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, and bassist Mike Kroeger, and it went through several drummer changes between 1995 and 2005 before Daniel Adair joined. The band signed to Roadrunner Records in 1999, setting the stage for wider recognition beyond the Canadian club circuit. The band signed with Roadrunner Records in 1999 and reached a mainstream breakthrough in 2002 with the single "How You Remind Me," which reached number one in the United States and Canada. That breakthrough arrived fully with 2001's "Silver Side Up," the band's third studio album and the record that turned them into a global rock force. "Silver Side Up" is Nickelback's third studio album and their first commercially successful album spawning such radio hits as "How You Remind Me," "Never Again," and "Too Bad," and it was certified 6x platinum. Its lead single became the band's defining hit. Considered Nickelback's signature song, "How You Remind Me" reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Nickelback's only American chart-topper. The momentum only grew with 2005's "All the Right Reasons," which produced the singles "Photograph," "Rockstar," and "Far Away" and became a cultural juggernaut. The band's now classic All The Right Reasons insured Nickelback an indelible place in rock history, spending a staggering 112 consecutive weeks in the Top 30 of the Billboard Top 200, certified eight-times platinum in the U.S. and having sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, topping charts in four countries. It eventually earned Diamond certification. Nickelback's fifth studio album All the Right Reasons has been certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, celebrating 10 million sales and streams. Across a career now spanning three decades, Nickelback became one of the best-selling Canadian rock acts in history, with lineup stability, chart dominance, and industry honors marking their peak years. Nickelback is one of the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands, having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. In 2009, Billboard ranked them the most successful rock group of that decade; their song "How You Remind Me" was listed as the best-selling rock song and the fourth best-selling song of the decade overall. The band swept the Juno Awards in 2009, winning Album of the Year, Group of the Year, and the Fan Choice award in a single ceremony, and had already collected multiple Group of the Year trophies earlier in the decade. Since winning their first Juno in 2001 for best new group, Nickelback has amassed a total of 12 awards at the show, including group of the year four times between 2002 and 2009, single of the year for "How You Remind Me" in 2002, album of the year for Dark Horse in 2009, and the Fan Choice award in both 2004 and 2009. They also toured relentlessly during this period, including a 2001 run supporting fellow rockers 3 Doors Down as "How You Remind Me" was climbing the charts. In August that year, Nickelback played their first German tour. In early September, the band set out to tour with their friends 3 Doors Down. In 2023 the band's contributions to Canadian music were formally recognized when they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno Awards, held fittingly in their home province. Nickelback was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as part of the 2023 Juno Awards, held at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. Nickelback has remained an active touring act well into the 2020s, continuing to headline arenas and festival stages on the strength of their deep catalog of hits. Following their tenth studio album "Get Rollin'," released in the early 2020s, the band kept up a steady schedule of shows, including a return to the road in 2024 that brought sold-out crowds across dozens of cities. Whatever critics have said about their commercial-friendly sound over the years, their live shows continue to draw devoted, arena-sized crowds decades after their debut, a testament to the staying power of songs like "How You Remind Me," "Photograph," and "Rockstar."
